Sending Items Back To The United States

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 21st, 2010

Unaccompanied baggage is anything you do not bring back with you. These may be items that were with you when you left the United States or items that you acquired (received by any means) while outside the United States. In general, unaccompanied baggage falls into three categories: U.S. mail, express shipments, and freight.
U.S. Mail ShipmentsShipping through the U.S. mail, including parcel post, is a cost-efficient way to send items to the United States. The Postal Service sends all foreign mail shipments to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for examination. CBP officers then return packages that do not require duty to the Postal Service, which sends them to a local post office for delivery. The local post office delivers them without charging any additional postage, handling costs, or other fees.
Packages that contain fruits, vegetables, meat or other items of agricultural interest are inspected to ensure that items meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Plant Protection and Quarantine. The CBP agriculture specialist encloses a Mail Interception Notice, PPQ Form 287, to document any agriculture items that are removed from the package. The package is returned to the U.S. Postal Service for delivery.
If the package does require payment of duty, CBP attaches a form called a mail entry, CBP Form3419, which indicates how much duty is owed and charges a $5 processing fee as well. When the post office delivers the package, it will also charge a small handling fee.
Commercial goods—goods intended for resale—may have special entry requirements. Such goods may require a formal entry in order to be admitted into the United States. Formal entries are more complicated and require more paperwork than informal entries. Generally, informal entries are personal packages or commercial items worth less than $2,000. CBP employees may not prepare formal entries for you; only you or a licensed customs broker may prepare one.
If you believe you have been charged an incorrect amount of duty on a package mailed from abroad, you may file a protest with CBP. You can do this in one of two ways. You can accept the package, pay the duty, and write a letter explaining why you think the amount was incorrect. You should include with your letter the yellow copy of the mail entry (CBP Form3419). Send the letter and the form to the CBP office that issued the mail entry, located on the lower left-hand corner of the form.
The other way to protest duty is to refuse delivery of the package. Then within five days, send your protest letter to the post office where the package is being held. The post office will forward your letter to CBP and will hold your package until the protest is resolved.
Express ShipmentsPackages may be sent to the United States by private-sector courier or delivery service from anywhere in the world. The express company usually takes care of clearing your merchandise through customs and charges a fee for its service. Some travelers have found this fee to be higher than they expected.
Freight ShipmentsCargo, whether duty is owed on it or not, must clear customs at the first port of arrival in the United States. If you choose, you may have your freight sent, while it is still in CBP custody, to another port for clearance. This is called forwarding freight in bond. You, or someone you appoint to act for you, are responsible for arranging to clear your merchandise through CBP or for having it forwarded to another port.
Frequently, a freight forwarder in a foreign country will take care of these arrangements, including hiring a customs broker in the United States to clear the merchandise through CBP. Whenever a third party handles the clearing and forwarding of your merchandise, that party charges a fee for its services. This fee is not a CBP charge.
There are several ways a traveler can find a broker: * Phone book - in the Yellow Pages under “Customs Brokers” * Internet - search for “Customs Brokers” * CBP Website - click the “ports” button, click the state of interest and click on a city within the state. Under each city is a listing of brokers. Click “view list” for a listing of brokers in that area.
The phone book listings as well as the Internet listings are limited to brokers that submit the information. It is not all-inclusive.
The listing of brokers on the CBP Website is updated on a regular basis. Listed brokers have a current permit in that port. This list is the only broker information provided by CBP.
When a foreign seller entrusts a shipment to a broker or agent in the United States, that seller usually pays only enough freight to have the shipment delivered to the first port of arrival in the United States. This means that you, the buyer, will have to pay additional inland transportation, or freight forwarding charges, plus broker fees, insurance, and possibly other charges.
If it is not possible for you to secure release of your goods yourself, another person may act on your behalf to clear them through CBP. You may do this as long as your merchandise consists of a single, noncommercial shipment (not intended for resale) that does not require a formal entry—in other words, if the merchandise is worth less than $2,000 and you must give the person a letter that authorizes that person to act as your unpaid agent.
Once you have done this, that person may fill out the CBP declaration and complete the entry process for you. Your letter authorizing the person to act in your behalf should be addressed to the “Officer in Charge of CBP” at the port of entry, and the person should bring the letter with them when they go to clear your package.
CBP will not notify you when your shipment arrives, as this is the responsibility of your carrier. If your goods are not cleared within 15 days of arrival you could incur expensive storage fees.

sell your timeshare

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 20th, 2010

There are not many things more difficult then selling a timeshare. Even with the multitude of people that say they can help you. Unfortunately, many of these people are ready to take advantage of you lack of comfort and insecurity of the market. The Internet has countless stores of fraudsters that have robed timeshare owners of their property and money. Fortunately for you, there are things that you can do to help ensure you have a fighting chance of selling you timeshare without hurting your pride.
Tip #1: Know Your PositionYou should know and understand that selling a timeshare can be very hard. Indeed, selling a timeshare and making a profit is practically impossible. The reason this is so is simply because the demand for vacation timeshares is far smaller than the supply of timeshares on the market. This can be understandably discouraging. But, knowing that before you look at your options can help you manage your expectations.
Tip #2: Know Your LimitationsMost people buy timeshares from a developer. The developer has spent a lot of money to promote each one. They can afford to do this because their expenses are spread over many units in the same resort.
When you sell a timeshare you are not going to host a potential buyer to a weekend, all-expenses paid vacation to make a sales pitch to them. The people that want to buy timeshares usually do not know they can buy them from private parties. These two factors show that you have a very limited market of potential buyers to sell to.
Tip #3: Price To Sell and Know the MarketYou already realize you may need to take a significant loss in order to sell your timeshare. Check the prices of what other timeshare resales have sold for recently. Ignore the list prices. You need to see what the selling prices were to gage your market correctly.
Tip #4: Advertise in a Cost-Effective mannerPlacing an ad in newspapers or magazines can become expensive quickly. Instead, advertise your vacation timeshare on the Internet. Post free classified ads online in as many venues as you can find. Look for newsgroups that are devoted to timeshares, rental properties and travel. Post ads on eBay and CraigsList. Also, look for websites that are devoted to the timeshare marketplace and check to see if you can post inexpensive classified ads there. For example, websites such as Tug2.net offer a 3-month classified ad for only $10. People who are seeking to buy a timeshare are likely visiting these types of websites.
Bonus Tip #5: BrokersConsider a resale broker if selling your timeshare is urgent. A good broker will help you get exposure for your timeshare and help you sell it. Just keep in mind that a broker can be expensive. Normally they charge an upfront fee on the sale. Don t let this stop you from asking them if they will for on commission only without the extra fee. This will allow you to only pay them when a sale is actually made.
Remember, there are a lot of pitfalls when it is time to sell your timeshare. Scammers are just waiting to take advantage of your ignorance. However when you are armed with the right information you will be protected. Keep the tips you learned here in mind and research as much as you can. With good information and the right perspective, you will sell your vacation timeshare.

Selecting the Right Mobility Scooter Lift for Your Vehicle

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 20th, 2010

Choosing to purchase a mobility scooter can be a wonderful decision in helping you to regain your independence. However, if you neglect to purchase a lift to enable you to transport your scooter, then you may be missing out on a great benefit. A mobility scooter lift will allow you to easily transport your scooter with you when you go on long, or even short trips, giving you that added freedom that prompted you to purchase the scooter in the first place. You can find a good quality scooter lift for much less money than you think, but there are other aspects that you should keep in mind. First, you should determine whether you want your lift to be motor driven or manually operated. The manually operated lifts are, of course, less expensive, however, you may find a power operated lift much more beneficial. It depends on whether or not you can manually operate the lift yourself, or if someone can operate it for you. If you do not have the strength to operate the lift, and will not have someone with you to help you, then a power operated lift is a much smarter choice. You will also need to determine whether your lift should be internal or externally located. An external lift will secure your scooter to the outside of your vehicle via a trailer hitch. If your vehicle is a small one, or you have limited room inside, then the external lift is the optimal choice. An internal lift will keep your scooter safe from the outside elements, and is a wonderful choice if there is room in your vehicle for the scooter while traveling. Before you choose your scooter lift, you will need to know the specifics about the vehicle that you will be using it with. For instance, you will need to know the exact make, model, and year of your vehicle, in order to purchase the correct lift. If you do not determine these facts, then the lift you purchase may very well not work with your vehicle. Knowing the specifics about your vehicle will help you to purchase the exact lift that you need. You should also know the weight capacity that you need. Lifts generally handle between 350 and 500 pounds. If you do not need a lift capacity of 500 pounds, then you could save money by purchasing one with a lower weight capacity. Determine beforehand what weight limits you will use, and use that information when making your purchase. Once you know the specifics of what you need, then you are ready to begin comparing models and manufacturers to ensure that you receive the most beneficial lift at the absolute best price. Purchasing a lift for your mobility scooter will, again, give you even more freedom to come and go as you please, but it is vitally important that you have all your information available before making the actual purchase. Knowing your requirements regarding weight, size, and operation can save you time and money, and make your purchase experience an even more positive one.

Security Tips For First Time Travelers

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 19th, 2010

For some, traveling is a way to do business while for others, it is their time for enjoyment. Frequent travelers often know the ins and outs of traveling locally or overseas. However, statistics reveal that these travelers are usually people who travel for business whose main objective is to meet and talk to clients. Clearly, all they need is a hotel room. But pleasure fliers, or those who travel for vacations need more than just hotels. They travel to learn and explore new places and cultures. If you are one of them or planning to be just like them, you need a handful of general travel security tips to help keep your travel safe and enjoyable.
It is never a bad idea to learn something about the culture of the place that you plan to visit. Learn about the social norms, manners of dress, cuisine, form of government, and religious practices. Informing yourself about a nation’s history, culture, customs and politics make your stay more significant. Even if English is a global language and spoken almost everywhere, it is to your advantage to try to learn the language of the locals. Grab a few useful phrases, greetings, and all other relevant information about your destination from the local library, travel books, and the Internet. Another general travel tip that is usually neglected is bringing light luggage. A lighter and less bulky luggage allows you to explore more freely and gives you ease of movement. This does not mean that you leave your essentials behind; rather, this means that you take only what is essential. Take only your toiletries, medicines, money substitutes, camera, and enough change of clothes. It is advisable to take clothes that are versatile and easily matched with other clothes in your luggage. For example, black trousers or pants go well with almost anything more than printed or embroidered jeans. It is also important to secure all travel documents like passports and travel insurance. Invest in a body document bag and wear it under your clothes. Better yet, deposit valuable documents in the hotel safe. Being tourists in a new place gets you special treatment but it also makes you a special target for theft.
Avoiding overseas theft is one factor that makes traveling safety necessary One way to avoid being a target is to dress simply and conservatively. The less jewelry, gadget, or expensive accessories you put on, the less your risks of getting robbed are. Thieves are attracted like bees to a honey pot to any show of affluence. Consider bringing only travelers’s check or a credit card or two as cash substitute. Putting name tags on your bags and luggage is a good idea but it also allow bad elements to identify you. Travel security specialists suggest putting covered tags on the inside and outside your luggage. A hint for those who plan to travel: get the local US consul’s office address and phone number. They provide assistance to American travelers who find themselves in trouble. These general travel tips do not mean to scare you out of international travel but to put you in your guard. Abroad, you are not in your territory and you are subject to the local laws; it is better to exercise safety practices.

Secure yourself before you make a next trip abroad

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 18th, 2010

While traveling abroad, most of us incorporate the best advice about trip planning and take utmost care to travel safely. The most serious problem a traveler can face is the possibility of having a health problem. And if you are traveling oversees, then it becomes really important to secure your trip to deal with unforeseen medical issues in a foreign country. While other kinds of insurances secure you financially, medical insurance secures you physically. International travel insurance goes a long way in ensuring that you get the right medical facilities while you are away from home. Medical Insurance plans are designed to cover the cost of medical procedures but, these insurance plans may not provide you compensation for the major medical expenses. Therefore, you should carefully select a plan that caters to your travel needs. There are different types of medical insurance plans in the market today. You can consider travel medical insurance that provides protection against all health related problems that might occur while you are traveling outside your own country. Another option would be to buy a plan depending on the type of traveler you are which includes student travel medical insurance, travel accident insurance and even backpackers travel insurance. Moreover, there are international medical insurance plans that offer coverage for short term and long term travelers.
Make sure that the health and accident cover plan that you choose also covers all doctor’s consultation fees, bill payments, and the hospitalization charges as well. When selecting an international travel Insurance plan pay attention to all the minute details in the insurance form. Keep a track of all important numbers and addresses to be contacted while you need to make a claim. In case you need an emergency medical treatment, make all the expenses listed in the itemized bill so you can make a claim back home. Many international travel insurance companies offer insurance plans at much lower prices, as the cost of health care is much lower in other countries as compared to US or Canada.
There are several options to find insurance at cheap rates. Some medical insurance do not cover the pre-existing illness. You can ask your insurance agent to exclude the cost of pre-existing illness, this will lower the insurance costs. Moreover, you can now compare insurance policies and shop online for the best deals for every budget. If you are traveling in a group, it is always easier to find cheap prices for group insurance. Some international medical plans do not provide coverage against dangerous activities and outdoor sports such as skiing, mountain climbing, and skydiving. Decide whether you need insurance for such activities before traveling and choose plan accordingly, as most companies will not allow you to add-on the adventure sport coverage to your policy once you reach your destination.
Buying international travel insurance prevents you from any unforeseen situation that you might face while traveling abroad. Make sure you get your health insurance as early as possible as many plans have a waiting period, after the premium has been paid.

Secrets for Sensational Safari Photos

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 18th, 2010

Exploring wilderness areas on safari and viewing wildlife in its natural habitat is a breathtaking experience and to capture this experience photographically is especially gratifying. When you’re on safari in Africa, you can expect to take most of your photos from within a Land Rover, car or boat since the vehicle allows a safe approach to getting close to wild animals. Some areas offer walking safaris with a guide, but photographing wild animals on foot is more dangerous and does not permit the close proximity of a vehicle or boat. Remember that stalking and approaching wild animals is potentially dangerous. Although most animals do not view a vehicle as a threat, almost all will run away from humans on foot. As a result, photographing wild animals on foot is far more challenging – plus, you have to carry all your equipment. For walking safaris, I recommend bringing only your best zoom lens as it offers the most versatility.
When photographing from a vehicle, it is best to turn off the engine before attempting to take any photographs. Although the vibrations from the vehicle’s engine may seem inconsequential, they will ultimately be noticeable in your pictures, especially if you are using a telephoto lens. Using a tripod from an open-air vehicle or boat is quite possible if you have a private vehicle or have only one or two passengers per row of seats. If you don’t have a tripod, be sure to use whatever support is available (bean bag, monopod, roof-top) to avoid camera shake.
Tips for Getting StartedThe following are some tips to get you started on your safari photo adventure:If you plan to be on safari for many days, be sure to bring enough digital storage. You never want to be faced with passing up an excellent photo opportunity or having to delete good images. Know your camera - you don’t want to miss a shot! Because many scenes, especially those with a high degree of contrast, can fool your camera’s automatic metering, practice using your camera’s exposure compensation and also the different metering options (spot, center-weighted and evaluative). Experiment with shooting moving objects and anticipating the action. Some of your best images will be of animal interactions and animals on the move (birds flying, zebras running, lions hunting). Be patient and wait for things to happen - you’ll be rewarded with spectacular opportunities. Also, when you get to a location, really take time to listen and observe- most of my best sightings have come when the vehicle is turned off and listening for clues. Constantly driving around will not yield good results. Try to include something in the foreground to enhance the sense of depth when photographing landscapes. Something as simple as a rock, a termite mound or a person will effectively add scale and interest to your composition. Always be sure to focus on an animal’s eyes whenever possible. Having the eyes in sharp focus will make the difference between an image which works and one which is a throw-away. Animals don’t stay in one place for very long, so be prepared. Always move cautiously, slowly and smoothly and stay the recommended distance when photographing or observing wildlife. ALWAYS be respectful of wild animals and never pressure or stress them. Don’t hesitate to go out on “bad” weather days–some of the most striking images are captured during inclement weather. In summary, for many people photography is one of the most essential parts of an African safari. Photographs are much more than just a record of where you have been and what you have seen—they are something to look back on in later years or a way of sharing your experience with friends and family back at home. In addition, many people get as much enjoyment out of taking the photos themselves as they do in seeing the animals and sights and they will take great satisfaction in their photos for years to come.

Scuba Diving Travel

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 17th, 2010

Scuba diving travel can be one of the most enjoyable vacations you ever take. With thousands of destinations to choose from, there is always a destination that is jam packed full of activities for both above and below the water.
Package destinations are the best choice for those just starting out. You can have the air fare, accommodations and diving all included, planned and all you have to do is pay a one time fee. Some of these are all inclusive, which means all your meals and beverages are included as well, which can limit your dining options a little but can save you’re a lot of cash. The biggest benefit of taking a total scuba diving travel package is the friends that you meet. These packages are usually filled with individuals like you that enjoy the sport among other common interests. Besides, diving with a group is always much more fun then diving alone.
If traveling far distances is not for you then most anywhere you live there are usually interesting diving locations. By taking your boat on your getaway, you can hit the water any time you wish and stay on the water as long as you and your family wish. You might want to take some friends along so that you can dive as a group and still have someone in the boat timing the dive to ensure safety. If your boat is large enough and has sufficient sleeping accommodation for the group, you can even stay aboard the vessel and simply pay dockage fees. If your local destinations are not interesting enough but you prefer a more private scuba diving vacation, then you can always work with your travel agent to find those hidden away destinations that do not have packages available. There are plenty of charter dive boats that you could reserve in many dive vacation spots around the world. The beauty of renting a charter is you get someone that knows the waters and has a crew that can help in case an emergency situation happens.
The reality is that the options for scuba diving travel are for the most part limitless. Just remember to have fun planning your scuba diving holiday and even more fun taking it.

Saving Time While Booking Travel Online

Posted in travel by publisher on the January 16th, 2010

Before they haul out the big suitcase, before they put a hold on the mail and before they make house- and pet-sitting arrangements, a growing number of American travelers are taking a different sort of trip: a trip online. That’s because travel arrangements have evolved, with Web sites often taking the place of travel agents in the organization and planning of family vacations, weekend getaways, business trips and more. In addition, in 2005, four out of five Americans who arranged trips on the Web also bought their tickets online, up from 70 percent in 2004. When booking a trip, many consumers use a site such as Expedia, Travelocity or Orbitz. These sites are known as online travel agencies, or OTAs, and they work by rapidly searching through many travel suppliers, such as airlines, hotel chains, etc. Meanwhile, a recent study conducted by MSN and Harris Interactive says that 75 percent of U.S. adults who have ever taken a vacation visit three or more Web sites when researching and booking their travel plans. The question then becomes, why do consumers search multiple sites when planning and booking travel? Many do so hoping to find a great deal. But is it worth it to shop around? The answer is yes; no one OTA searches all of the travel suppliers in the United States, and each OTA has different arrangements giving them access to deals the others don’t have. Oftentimes, consumers miss out on finding the best deals for their trips because they don’t shop around enough or they don’t know where to look. One Web site, BookingBuddy.com, has all of the travel sites-from Expedia to Travelocity to JetBlue to Hertz-under one roof. While the site doesn’t sell travel, it makes it easier and faster for consumers to book travel. A site such as this lets users enter their itinerary once and then search any OTA or travel supplier without having to type in the Web address and itinerary over and over again. It’s a big time savings, and because it’s comprehensive, consumers won’t miss out on a site just because they didn’t know about it or didn’t remember it.
And as with other OTAs, consumers can use BookingBuddy as a one-stop shopping portal for hotels, package deals and car rentals.
