Is Travel with your Kids a Monumental Family Disaster?

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 31st, 2009

Whatever your mode of travel, there will be special challenges if you take the kids along. The key to sanity is some careful planning - and a calm, unruffled approach.
* Where Should we Stay? *If you are planning at stay at a bed and breakfast, do some research. Many bed and breakfasts are not suitable for children. However, you may be able to find a ‘farmstay’ - a bed and breakfast on a farm that allows your kids to interact with the animals. This can be an unequalled family experience - especially for city dwellers.
Staying in a hotel? Do they provide extra cots and/or cribs for children? Do they have a restaurant with a kids’ menu? Is there a playroom or playground on the premises? Are there children’s activities nearby?* What Should I Pack? *Use common sense. Every family is different. Check the following list and pack what is appropriate for your household: - Small first aid kit - Liquid anti-nausea medication - Liquid Tylenol - Individual-sized tissues - Moistened hand-wipes in individual packs - Paper towels - Photos of the kids and important details regarding medications - Telephone numbers of doctors (at home and at your destination) - Copies of passports, birth certificates, custody documentation - Decks of cards, favorite toys, children’s books - Coloring books, crayons, mechanical pencils, paper - Crossword puzzle books, erasable pens, highlighters - Windbreakers, slickers, umbrellas - Sunglasses, hats, sunscreen - Plastic bags from grocery store checkout (for storage and cleanup)* Diaper Disposal *There are scented disposal bags available - or you might want to pack some small zip-lock bags. Plastic grocery bags or newspaper bags can also be used. The solid matter should be disposed of down the toilet. Next, roll the diaper up with the soiled area facing inwards so that you have a compact bundle with the plastic on the outside. Place the diaper in the zip-lock bag, seal most of the way, then press out as much air as possible while you complete the seal. Discard in a bathroom garbage container or outside garbage bin.
If you are outdoors and there are no outhouse or bathroom facilities nearby, you should carry the entire diaper contents with you, disposing of appropriately when you find a garbage bin or bathroom. DO NOT leave diapers or diaper contents behind. Besides polluting the environment, some animals are attracted to human waste. Protect the environment even more by making sure that you purchase biodegradable diapers (or switch to cloth).
If you must carry soiled diapers along with you for any length of time, you might want to consider packing a few deodorant disks or a baking-soda based scented deodorizer.
* Snacks *If your children are finicky eaters, chances are you will encounter problems with airline and restaurant meals. Pack a few nutritious snacks. Snacks may include fresh fruit, granola bars, individual-size cereal boxes, cheese and crackers, raisins, unsalted peanuts - or snack-size containers of applesauce, puddings, and fruit cocktail.
* Boredom *Boredom is always going to be a problem. Even a half-hour trip seems like a long time to a young child. The easiest and most accessible boredom solution is YOU. Use the time to interact with your kids. Ask them questions. Get them to tell you stories if they are old enough. You can keep young children entertained by telling them stories - complete with sound effects of animal noises, whistles, and whatever else you can invent.
Play guessing games like ‘I Spy’ with older kids, or get them involved in some children’s cards games. Although games like ‘Go Fish’ can be played with a regular deck of cards, there are many games with special, brightly-colored decks made just for children. Do an internet search for ‘card games for kids’ and you’ll find plenty of resources.
* Inactivity *Sitting still for long periods of time is not a natural activity for children. If you’re on a plane, train, or bus, get up and take a walk down the aisle once every hour. When travelling by car, find an appropriate pullout and play frisbee or go for a short walk.
* Relax - Lighten Up - Unwind *Treat every family trip as an opportunity to connect with your children. Relax, enjoy their unique personalities, and enjoy yourself!

Is the Water Buffalo Really Sick?

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 31st, 2009

You have scrimped and saved all year long. You have put in overtime hours so that you will have extra money for your holiday. Don’t flush it all down the toilet falling for some sad sob story from an 18 year old farm girl.
I have never understood how uneducated or little educated lasses from Northeastern Thailand can pull the wool over seemingly intelligent men from America, Europe, Australia and the rest of the 1st world countries.
The girls may also claim that their mother is sick, their brother is in jail, their grandfather died, or their sister needs money for school. Lies, lies, lies. Don’t fall for the scam. They can be so convincing and sound so sweet and innocent that we feel we have to help them. After all, we have discretionary money and they are so, so poor. They play on your heartstrings and know that it works. It may not work on every one of their contacts but they will find someone stupid who will send them money.
Most likely they won’t pull this until after you have left and gone home to your country. They will call you or send you an email and initially test the waters. If they find you lonely and missing your girl in Thailand, they will strike and try to get all they can. Usually they start out small and increase the amounts as they go on. This is similar to what legitimate charities do.
They will profess their love, promise to meet you and take care of you when you return, as long as you help them out with their problem.
You can try to fool yourself and say that this one is different. You can convince yourself that she is sincere and that this really is an emergency and you will ride your white horse and come to her rescue. She will laugh all the way to the bank.
Keep in mind that not only will she be playing you; she will have other sponsors that she is taking for all she can get too. Some of the girls will juggle 5 or 6 relationships, receive monthly stipends, and coordinate visits that don’t overlap. And do all this without a blackberry.
They are very convincing and know what buttons on the farang (foreigner) to push. They share information at the bars, massage parlors, and beauty shops. They know how to copy and paste sad sob stories to email to you. They have someone to translate for them and help them write those money soliciting emails.
Don’t surrender to these little girls. They may seem sweet and innocent but they can be ruthless and conniving. It is kind of like the car salesman. He has the advantage since he sells cars every day and you only buy a car once every five years. The girls have the advantage over wide-eyed, drunk, “handsome me” in Thailand. As cynical as this sounds, there are some good ladies in Thailand – you just have to hunt for them and look in places besides bars and massage parlors.
Be safe and smart. Use your big head to think and don’t fall for the sick buffalo story.

Is it Wise to Travel away from Home While your House is Empty?

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 30th, 2009

Did you know that potential break-in artists could be waiting to burglarize your home while you are on holidays? And who is going to mow the lawn while you’re away? Who will watch for fires or leaks in the hot-water heating system? An empty house can be a recipe for disaster!Career criminals will be on the alert for things like: * Yards with untrimmed hedges and unwatered lawns * More than a day’s worth of newspapers inside the screen door * Windows that reveal no change in lighting during the night * An absent vehicle in the garage or driveway * Full garbage bins that are not set out on collection day * Mail carriers skipping a house because of redirected mail * Nobody answering the door when someone rings the bellCrafty criminals will often ring the doorbell themselves before attempting a break-in. If you are at home, they will have a reasonable story like: ‘I am conducting a survey of homeowners in the area to see if they are happy with the local school system.’No thief wants to be caught, and no burglar will want to put more effort than necessary into a robbery. Criminals are by necessity suspicious (and lazy as well). Anything you can do to make your house more challenging is likely to deter them. A good security system is a commendable first step.
But is a security system enough? Maybe you should investigate hiring a housesitter. A housesitter can help prevent break-ins, and can also monitor for fires, roof leaks, and other potential home emergencies.
The internet is full of helpful sites. An internet search for keywords and phrases similar to the following will help you to locate a good sitter: * house sitting services * find house sitter * professional housesitters * experienced home sitter * pet sitting serviceAt the end of this article is a link to a page containing several search engines.
As a homeowner, you can usually post a free ad in a housesitter directory. Many sites will have an auto e-mail service that notifies you whenever a new housesitter registers in your community. Housesitting services may include: * Mowing the lawn and trimming the hedge * Watering houseplants * Walking, feeding, and caring for pets * Picking up mail and newspapers * Paying bills * Answering the telephoneHomesitters come from various walks of life - and ages may vary from late teens/early twenties to ?? Typical sitters might be: * Retirees * A world traveller who is trying to conserve on expenses * A college student trying to make ends meet * A person who needs a place to stay during home renovations * Someone new in the communityIn recompense for their services, a home sitter will receive free rent and (usually) an additional fee. Sitters are normally responsible for their own food and telephone calls.
It is important that all arrangements are in writing. Some of the important points you should include in your written contract include: * How long the sitter is permitted to be away from the premises * The maximum number of guests allowed (’zero’ being an option) * Expectations for pet, plant, and yard care * What should happen in case of illness or emergency * Exact duration of house-sitting contract * What will happen if your return home is delayedIf you are working with a professional housesitting service, be sure that it does appropriate security checks on its employees. If you are hiring a private sitter, ask local law enforcement authorities what is needed for you to perform your own background investigations.
This article is just a short primer on the subject of homesitting. Be sure to spend sufficient time doing individual research long before your holidays.
. . . And Happy Travels!

Is Flying Cheap Always Better?

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 29th, 2009

When it comes to finding bare bones airfares for even the most meager budget, there are many options. Whether you purchase a ticket on one of the popular budget airlines, scour the World Wide Web for the best deal, or engage in an alternative form of cheap travel, there are ways to find a cheap ticket. However, keeping the old adage, “you get what you pay for” in mind, flying on a cheap ticket can be anything but luxurious.
Typically, the easiest way to find the cheapest flight is to sacrifice your travel dates. By keeping a flexible schedule, you are most likely to find the least expensive flight available. However, that being said, having the luxury of a flexible schedule is not always available to all individuals, especially those individuals who have a strict work schedule or are looking to travel to attend a certain event. Also, staying flexible to find the cheapest airfare may find that you need to add extra nights onto your stay, meaning your hotel room and car rental will need to be extended, which costs you more cash.
Many individuals will travel great distances in order to find the cheapest ticket from a nearby airport. However, keep in mind that the further you travel the most gas, time, and effort is expended in order to keep the ticket prices down. Before you agree to drive a hundred miles to save money on your flight, consider if the associated travel expenses will outweigh the savings. The same goes for individuals agreeing to fly into airports other than the one of their desired destination.
If you are interested in flying on one of the budget airlines; however, you may be in for quite a surprise. Often, these budget airlines, including Jet Blue and even Southwest, are ranked high in customer satisfaction. Almost all airlines have stopped food service except on international flights or flight to Alaska or Hawaii due to prices, so budget airlines often have the same amenities as other airlines.
One of the cheapest ways to travel is to sign on to a courier service. By working as a courier, you will accompany a package on the flight and be responsible for meeting the intended party in order to sign over the package. This task often takes a few minutes, but the savings associated with flying as a courier are extreme. Often, trans-Atlantic flights are offered for under $100, or sometimes even free. Of course, by flying as a courier, your schedule and destination must be completely flexible. Also, you may not be allowed to travel on a round trip ticket, meaning that you will have to wait at the destination in order for another job to come open in order to return home.

Is A Second Passport A Second Chance

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 29th, 2009

A second Passport or better even a second citizenship?Second citizenship can be something like a global insurance policy that entails any individual to make use of the dissimilar parts of two countries for a better set of options, most likely financially. It can become quite apparent in small nations with a not-so-bright socio-economic condition, where individuals often find it easier to make a better living in another country. One that you can choose. Dual nationality has always been held by wealthy people with a knowledge of world history. They know of the dangers of placing an entire future in the hands of politicians. Patriotism might be OK if governments were consistent and let you be free. But socialistic Big Brother bureau(c)rats now have the power to run your life from cradle to grave. Most of them think that all people who own businesses. securities, gold, foreign bank accounts or property are criminals who should be relieved of them and what little freedom they still have left. It is therefore imperative for the security of anyone of substance or ambition to have at least one other passport and nationality.
A second passport can give you peace of mind. It can help save you taxes. It also expands your travel opportunities. In some circumstances a second passport could even save your life. Here more specifically are some of the reasons someone might want a second passport.
Residence.
Residence gives you the right, without having to ask permission, to liveand work in the country of your choice.
Security.
“Just in case.” The world is an unstable place. Anything could happen — although it probably won’t. Against the day when it might, however, a second passport, or second nationality, means that when you decide you’re no longer happy in your normal place of residence, you do not need to apply forpermission to reside somewhere else, because you already have the right to do so.
Travel.
A second passport can make it easier for you to travel to many countries, especially if you now hold a restricted passport such as a Hong Kong Certificate of Identity, or a Taiwanese, Israeli or South African passport. Depending on your choice of second passport, or second nationality, the process ofgaining entry to many other countries can be made much more simpler.
Safety.
Even if you hold one of the world’s most respected passports~ such as that of a US citizen, there can be times when you wish you were able to show some other piece of identification. For example: when the aircraft in which you are traveling is hi-jacked by anti-American terrorists.
Business and work.
Another passport will more often than not give you the right to work and do business in its country of issue without obtaining a work permit, and similar advantages above and beyond those of your current national status. Citizenship of a member state of the European Economic Community gives you the right, under the Treaty of Rome, to live, work and/or establish a business in any other member country of the EEC.
Taxes.
A change of residence or citizenship (depending on your current nationality) can, if properly handled, save a high taxpayer a significant amount of money. There are many reasons why you might want a second passport. But the process of obtaining one from most countries usually requires 5 or 6 years residence in the country concerned. Unless you really want to go and live there right now, that price may be more than you want to pay. You may have to give up, in whole or in part, your present career and life pattern. Moreover there are often many hurdles to surmount in obtaining the initial right to reside without which the qualifying period of residence cannot even begin; so the number of people who do qualify is small compared with the numbers of people who would like to do so.
A different way to acquire a second nationality is simply to buy a passport. Libertarians may find this distasteful on the grounds that we should be free to live and work anywhere in the world without restriction. Often, too, a large chunk of the price goes to useless government officials (direct bribery), or is spent by the government on grandiose projects (indirect bribery).
In reality, you can buy a passport from any country — it is merely a question of price. The laws of the US, for example, which contained at the time no provision for investor immigration or business immigration, did not prevent people like the Australian Rupert Murdoch from becoming a US citizen. If you have lots of money and good lawyers you can get in anywhere.
Countries where citizenship is not ostensibly for sale nevertheless compete quite blatantly for the patronage of wealthy individuals. They create provisions in their immigration laws for the admission of business migrants with wallets fat enough to provide governments with help in getting re-elected by claiming to have saved or created jobs by their wise policies. Examples? Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Other place less emphasis on the immigration aspects of inward investment but, as a by-product, immigration possibilities are nevertheless there — they have to be, to enable the investor to keep a close eye on his investment, or he will not part with his money.
Examples? The Philippines and the UK. Some countries look to import the spending power that persons in retirement can bring in response to offers of immigration rights — often on condition that they are not allowed to compete with the native workforce, which has the votes. The Philippines, again, is an example.
A change of residence or citizenship (depending on your current nationality) can, if properly handled, save a high taxpayer a significant amount of money. There are many reasons why you might want a second passport. But the process of obtaining one from most countries. Usually requires 5 or 6 years residence in the country concerned.
The Second Passport Program is specifically designed to give the client a gateway to freedom which will afford the client the secrecy, privacy, and confidentiality that he needs in order to begin a new life in a new country or to travel in privacy. This program is also designed to put you in control of your own personal and business assets in such a manner that absolutely “nobody” can ever touch, remove, extract, place a lien, sue in court, foreclose, confiscate, attach, steal, divorce petition, or acquire alimony, to mention only a few items. A Second Passport will put you outside of the jurisdiction of any U.S. or State court and proceedings. Jurisdiction is the KEY to freedom. You can learn how to utilize and exploit this to your advantage.
Every country has its own citizenship rules. Some countries welcome individuals with nationalized ancestors. Others give passports to those of a certain religion. Some for simply buying real estate, or through so called ‘Economic Citizenship Investment Programs’. The rules and the opportunities are endless. Though the easiest and - quickest! - way to secure citizenship is through simple purchase - many governments issue passports to gain extra revenue - the question is, which government and at what cost?Where you go and what you do, should be your business and not that of the (IRS) or your government or any other government. We know which, and for how much, at any given moment!

To organize your trip in Istanbul, (Turkey) there are many free and useful tools on-line, from city guide to ticket-bookers, to accommodations advices and flight reservations. In the words of French poet Alphonse de Lamartine, if one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul. Indeed, this is a city of astonishing beauty. Its architecture, cuisine, history and culture make up a fascinating tapestry of yesterday and very much tomorrow. A metropolitan capital with an imperial history stretching back for over 1500 years, Istanbul is today the commercial, historical and cultural core of Turkey. But most of all, it’s a buzzing, living-breathing metropolis that is knocking at the doors of the European Union. It won’t be hard to find a suitable accommodation (there are many youth hostels for backpackers or travellers on a budget up to enchanting hotels featuring Turkish interior designs, typical pieces of furniture, mosaics, spa and thermal baths at affordable prices). We found some in this website (Flashbooking) featuring gorgeous views over Bosporus and Istanbul Blue Mosque and markets.

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 28th, 2009

Elba, the largest isle of the Tuscan Archipelago, is the land of warm clement weather, broad-spectrum seas, panoramic beaches, lush green countryside and in all, the land of natural reservoir. Located in the middle of Tuscan Archipelago Marine Park, Elba can be reached by just an hour ferry ride from Piombino. The land of beautiful marine life and dramatic drop-offs on the sea bed magnetizes visitors from all around the globe. This shimmering island is a home to innumerable exotic flora and fauna, the zingy coastline is alienated into beaches and rocks, the Mediterranean vegetation of macchia and the stillness of ancient countryside creates a highly poetic and romantic atmosphere. The third largest island in the Italy, Elba also boasts off the small fortress towns that are ideal for ambling around the city and a great alternative to a day off at a beach. The archeological treasures and the mining museum flash the archaic history of the places in and around this islet. And the widely spread chestnut woods makes the area plush and vibrant and ideal for lazing around. With an area of 200 sq km and a coastline of 147 km, the island of Isola d’Elba embraces more than 70 beaches. Each of the beaches is unique in itself and splendid with the grandeur sea water. The long undulating beaches of golden sands and the shimmering sea shore with the tiny stones; the equally magnetizing coastlines of black sand and the coast of white pebbles; the shoreline of the Elba Island has a panoramic insight. The cliff bases of smooth granite rocks and the crystal clear water of the beach, make these beaches equal to none. The perfect beach holiday resort, Elba also facilitates escapades like water sports - kayaking, diving, sailing for the water lovers. One can also indulge into leisure activities like swimming or sun basking. Many of the island beaches are classified as ‘free’. But there are also many privately owned establishments providing facilities like changing rooms, sun lounges, beach umbrellas and a range of equipments for water sport activities. If you are the kind of person who likes to laze around in the water, then there are some shallow water beaches, where the depth remains for up to 30-40 meters. In, Out, And Off Travel Tips

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 27th, 2009

Air travelers who follow three simple tips, which can be summarized as IN, OUT, and OFF, will contribute significantly to steps the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is taking to ensure aviation security and make travel as enjoyable as possible during any time of the year, especially during holiday seasons.
Air travel during any major holiday is expected to be heavy. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) will do everything they can to help travelers move smoothly through security checkpoints. Employee leave will be restricted, managers will be working with screeners, and checkpoints may open earlier or close later, depending on the airport. Also, vendor deliveries will be scheduled during slow hours and extra attention will be given to preventive maintenance so screening equipment doesn’t have to be taken off-line when the checkpoint is open. Following the three travel tips will prepare air travelers to go through checkpoints and drastically reduce chances of a more thorough secondary screening being required. Call it “Three for Three” - three tips that can avoid secondary screening that, on average, takes three minutes per person. The cumulative effect can be substantial, especially around the holidays, because travel is concentrated in only a few days.
Here’s what to do when approaching the checkpoint:IN - Place all metal items IN a carry-on bag while waiting in line. This would include coins, cell phone, keys, lighter, and any other metal.
OUT - Take laptops OUT of their cases.
OFF - Take coats, hats and shoes OFF. It is also a good idea to remove your belt if you have a large, metal buckle.
During the holidays, there are always more people traveling, so the security screening can take longer than usual. You can help speed it up by following the rules, listening to the TSA personnel, and coming prepared.
If you come prepared and are ready to efficiently go through the checkpoint, it helps the security screeners immensely, allowing them to concentrate on their security mission while making the travel experience more pleasant for everyone.
It also is a good time to revisit the general TSA Travel Tips that are familiar to frequent fliers:Everyone, even frequent fliers, should double check the content of their pockets and bags, particularly carry-on luggage, to ensure no prohibited items were inadvertently packed. Think about what you are wearing before going to the airport. Metal clothing or metal jewelry are likely to require additional screening. Pack undeveloped film in carry-on bags. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film. Wrap gifts upon arrival at your destination. If gifts require additional screening, screeners may have to un-wrap them. Do not over pack bags. If screeners have to open them, closing overstuffed bags can be difficult and result in delays for checked baggage. If TSA screeners need to open a locked bag for inspection they may have to break the lock. There are now products on the market that have uniform locking systems that enable TSA during a required inspection, to open and relock the bag. Passengers without such devices should consider leaving bags unlocked.
Always check the TSA web site before you travel to make sure you have the most current rules and policies.

International Assignments - Identifying Expatriation Needs

Posted in travel by publisher on the October 27th, 2009

According to the research I have done, it is fair to say that the success rate of expatriate assignments is dependant on the expatriate assignee and the spouse and/or family being happy. When people are happy they are effective and this is no different in the case of expatriates. Yet, a surprising outcome of the research more than suggests that the success rate of company expatriate assignments leaves much room for improvement. To avoid failure and unhappiness while working and living abroad it is important to examine each stage of the international assignment for both the assigned expatriate employee and the spouse. One must be able to identify the needs in order to help reduce stress.
Research and contact with expatriate employees leads me to believe that the requirements that are needed to ensure success do differ according to the stage of expatriation. Being aware of these needs allows you to be able to prepare for a happy and successful international appointment.
In the pre-departure stage you, your partner and family will need to be able to: * Be Informed in advance * Express concerns you may have * Establish contact with the host country * Understand general expectations in the host countryIn the initial stage in the host country your family will need to be able to: * Overcome stereotypes * Pinpoint daily living reference tips * Learn how to communicate * Understand behaviour patterns * Relax, start re-living your lives * Familiarize yourselves with the cultureIn the established stage in the host country your needs will include being able to: * Belong * Make connections with the local culture * Work on personal growthIn the final stage in the host country you will want to: * Prepare to go home * Evaluate your experiences * Share your success of the assignmentBy using this information, you can look into various possibilities to help equip yourself for culture shock. Develop strategies for helping your partner find a new job in the host country by helping him/her identify their strengths, talents and resources available to them. Attempt to organize living arrangements before your plane lands, look into schools in the area for your children, find out banking rules, check your financial status and live within your means.
I cannot stress it enough, prepare, prepare, prepare before departure! Take advantage of any training you may need, develop tools for success and surround yourself with a network of supportive groups and friends. By involving yourself whole-heartedly in your process of cross-cultural adjustment, you will increase the possibilities of making it a happy, productive and successful experience for you and your family on both a career and personal level.
Quote of the week“Success depends on previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.” Confucius
