Cambodia Taxi – a Leaf, a Radiator and a MacGyver Moment

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 14th, 2009

The roads in Cambodia are vicious, angry slabs of asphalt filled with potholes that would qualify as valleys in some countries. Fortunately, I had it made traveling from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh. Or so I thought.
Cambodian TaxisHaving spent two weeks in the relaxing beach town of Sihanoukville, I was getting bored and so were the three chaps traveling with me. It was time to head to the supposed chaos of Phnom Penh and eventually Angkor Wat. Despite the legendary reputation of Cambodian roads, the owner of our accommodations told us the road to Phnom Penh was smooth as glass. For twenty U.S. dollars, a local taxi would get all four of us to the city without incident.
Around noon, two Australians, an Englishman and myself crammed into a Toyota Camry with our backpacks and miscellaneous junk. Our driver was a good guy, smiling constantly. We did have a communication problem since he spoke about two words of English and we only spoke English. The road, however, was as smooth as promised and we congratulated ourselves on our stroke of luck.
For about an hour, we cruised through the placid Cambodian countryside. It was difficult to imagine the chaos that must have occurred when the Khmer Rouge was in power. There really wasn’t much to see beyond the occasional village. About half way through the trip, the lack of any sizeable towns became a concern.
In the proverbial middle of nowhere, our driver pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the car. Since we couldn’t verbally communicate, much finger pointing was undertaken. Were we lost? Did he want more money? Was he going on strike? What the heck was going on?Eventually, we foreign idiots were able to decipher that the car was overheating. Lest you think us complete idiots, I must mention that the temperature gauge wasn’t working. Regardless, our driver popped the hood and our smooth trip came to a cracked end. Steam poured from a half-inch crack next to the radiator crap.
Road site assistance seemed an iffy prospect in the middle of Cambodia. I mean, you couldn’t really call your car insurance company.
Me: “Hi. My car is broken.”Operator: “Okay, we will send someone out. Where are you?”Me: “Um, somewhere in the middle of Cambodia.”Operator: “…[hysterical laughter]… Click.”The driver looked at us. We looked at him. Simultaneously, we all started laughing. What else could you do? We were in the middle of nowhere, the radiator was shot and it was 60 miles or so to Phnom Penh.
Looking back, I can tell you that Cambodian taxi drivers are a committed and creative group. We sat on the side of the road, contemplating the fact that we were about to have a much more authentic Cambodian experience then any of us had planned. Mysteriously, our driver had gone off into the brush on the side of the road. After a few minutes, he returned with a dark green leaf and a big smile.
Putting MacGyver to shame, he proceeded to patch the crack in the radiator using only the leaf and tube of superglue. We all moved back as he applied the superglue to the boiling hot radiator, but nothing went up in flames. After allowing for a suitable amount of time for drying/praying, all we needed was water.
Although admittedly not a car expert, I do know pouring cold water into the radiator of an overheating engine is a bad idea. MacGyver, err… our driver, didn’t bat an eye despite our extensive arm waving. With a big smile, the water went into the radiator as we watched in horror. The only question was what would happen first, the leaf patch bursting or the engine seizing up?Well, you can guess how it turned out. Not only did we make it to Phnom Penh, we later learned the radiator had two other leaf patches on the bottom. The road had been smooth, but my nerves were still shot. One way or another, the roads of Cambodia will get you.
At least I have ample ammunition to mock MacGyver fans.

Buying the Perfect Mobility Scooter

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 14th, 2009

When buying the perfect mobility scooters you have to fully understand what you are looking for. There are many kinds of mobility scooters and they offer various features that will satisfy your different mobility needs. Most mobility scooters run on electricity which is more practical than have it running on gas.
Several factors must be given careful thought to properly match the user and the machine. The height of the person who will use the electric scooter determines the size of the scooter. A tall person should opt for bigger scooters because smaller ones might not give enough leg space. Although smaller scooters may be a whole lot cheaper and easier to transport but if the comfort of the person who will use it suffers then it will be a bad choice. Weight also plays an important role in buying the perfect electric mobility scooter. Smaller scooters are suitable for persons under 250 pounds. Heavy duty electric scooters on the other hand are designed to accommodate a load up to 400 pounds. Checking manufacturer specification will help you better understand how electric mobility scooters handle specific weights. Choosing a small electric scooter for a heavy person is not recommended because the heavy weight will place extra strain on the electric motor which is configured for a lesser load.
Also ask yourself, where will you use the scooter most of the time? Are you going to use it mostly inside the house or do you want to be riding it outdoors? Three-wheeled scooters are designed for easier maneuverability inside the house. The handle bars called tillers in three-wheeled scooters are designed for effortless steering. The single wheel in front responds quickly for better turns in small spaces. Also called travel scooters, these three-wheeled electric scooter models makes moving around the house easier even in tight bedroom corners. Rough surfaces outdoors can be handled perfectly by a four-wheeled heavy duty electric scooter. The cruising range is not a problem so you can go to reasonably anywhere with a bigger model.

Buying a Wheelchair Lift for the Home

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 13th, 2009

For those people who are immobilized for some reason or another getting around is an arduous task. Many of us do not realize how precious it is to freely roam, walk, run, climb stairs and be able to have access to various parts of our home. Things can be a bit more difficult if you are confined in a wheel chair. Sure you can move around even if you are restrained in a wheel chair, but your mobility is limited, most especially if you live in a house with stairs or other high areas that are inaccessible to wheelchairs. And if you have to climb up and down stairs you have to rely on others to lift you.
A wheelchair lift is an equipment that makes life for people with disabilities, more comfortable. It is becoming a popular choice for homes where a wheelchair is being used by a family member. A wheelchair lift increases a handicapped individual’s mobility, giving him freedom to move freely. Having a chair lift at home would give a person more independence and provide him the chance to go about with personal task freely. The independence of having access to upper floors or any elevated area at home where there are no ramps is now possible with the use of wheelchair lifts.
There are several types of wheelchair lifts. Some lifts are operated by electricity, while others employ simple hydraulic mechanisms and can be used without electrical power. And there are a lot of choices to choose from depending on your needs. In choosing the right type of chair lift to accommodate your needs there are several things that you have to keep in mind. You should take into consideration the person who will be using the equipment, you have to see to it that the structure of the lift is suitable for him.

Buying a Used Wheelchair Lift: Is It Safe?

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 13th, 2009

Buying a lift for your wheelchair, whether it be for your home or your vehicle, is an important decision. The most important aspect of purchasing a wheelchair lift is safety. While there are many styles and models available, there are also many pricing ranges. Among the least expensive of all wheelchair lifts are used lifts that are being sold, either because the current owner has upgraded to another model, or simply because they do not need the lift any longer. Used items are very popular, but when choosing a wheelchair lift, a used model may not always be the safest and best.
Consider first that with a used wheelchair lift you are not getting a warranty. Most manufacturers offer warranties of up to five years on new models, and with a used model, you will not have the assurance of a warranty to help you in case the lift stops working properly. Replacing parts on a wheelchair lift can be very expensive. In fact, if you are forced to replace an electronic motor, you will probably find that a new lift is even less expensive than the motor replacement itself. Purchasing parts are not the only expense that you may face if you opt to buy a used wheelchair lift. Considering that most people do not know how to repair wheelchair lifts, then you will probably need a repair person to install the new part. These fees alone can be outrageous. With the purchase price of the new part, and the fees to have someone install it for you, you will likely be better off, and save money, but purchasing a new lift to begin with.
Money is only one aspect of the problems that you may have with a used wheelchair lift. Safety should always be your number one concern when deciding on a lift. If you choose a lift that is used, then you have no way to determine how safe the mechanism is. If the motor stops working while the lift is halfway to its destination spot, then you, or your loved one, are stuck on the lift. You run the risk of falling off while you are working to get the lift moving again. There are many things to consider when purchasing a used wheelchair lift. Safety and money just happen to be the two most important aspects of the decision. If you are purchasing a wheelchair lift for a family member or loved one, or even for yourself, you should consider that this is not one of those things where you would be better off with the least expensive version. You can find inexpensive models that are new, but choosing a used lift has many problems in itself. To ensure your safety, or the safety of your loved one, consider the purchase decision again, and weight the pros and cons of a new lift versus a used one. Chances are you will see that a new lift is not that much more expensive, and the fact of knowing that you and your loved one are safe should make up the monetary difference.

Buying a Travel Solar Charger for Your Next Trip?

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 12th, 2009

A travel solar charger is a great purchase for anyone who likes to travel. This portable energy device is easy to use and runs off of the sun’s energy. A portable charger does not need any international voltage adapters because it never needs to be plugged into electricity. You will not have to worry about what adapter is used in the country you are going to; just bring your solar charger with you. Portable energy has long been talked about among fanatical energy conservatists. It no longer is only for those people who are against electricity and the overuse of it. Now solar energy is becoming very mainstream and people of all economic levels are using portable solar energy. You do not have to be extremely concerned about the environment to use solar portable energy. Although it is a great way to use our natural resources, solar power also offers great benefits to those that use it.
A travel charger that operates off of the sun’s energy can go anywhere you go. You do not need to have an electrical outlet close by to charge your cellular phone. You can be backpacking in the mountains and have your phone continually charging. If you like to go on road trips you can set your solar charger right on the dashboard and let it charge your batteries or device while you drive to your next location.
The convenience that a solar charge brings to a travelers life is not just in its portability. Solar chargers are also a great way to save money. Instead of buying multiple adapters for international outlets, you can use the same solar charger in any country you travel. You also will not have to own multiple charging devices to power all your different electrical equipment because one solar charger can be used to charge most small electrical devices.
Travelers can use a solar charger to charge their batteries. They can also use this type of travel charger to power other small electrical devices like radios, MP3 players, and even laptop computers. There are many varieties of solar chargers available with numerous accessories you can add on. When purchasing a solar charger, you are only limited by your own imagination.
Many travelers have put off buying a solar charger because they believe these types of chargers will be too technologically difficult to operate. But solar powered chargers are as simple as any other charging device. You do not need a high tech degree to operate them. Most chargers simply have to be set in the sun and plugged into your device. Solar energy is not a new technology. It has been around for several years. The portability of solar chargers has evolved dramatically in recent years. It used to be that you would have to own a huge solar panel just to draw a little bit of energy from the sun. Today, you can buy a small single solar cell panel that can be used to charge your electrical devices and batteries.

Bus Travel in the US—an Overview for Visitors

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 12th, 2009

Bus travel takes a different role in the car-driven culture of the United States than it does in most countries. Because the area of the US is so vast, flying is often the most attractive transportation option for traveling between cities and can be priced quite competitively when factoring in time and convenience. For shorter distances driving is usually the first choice for US domestic travelers. However, for routes that are under five or six hours, the bus is almost always the most economical and often the most convenient form of travel. Furthermore, as Amtrak (the national rail service) continues to see cuts in government funding, bus service is often the only ground transportation option for many destinations. Visitors who are planning to stick to major cities will most likely find having a car to be inconvenient, expensive, and unnecessary. Therefore, taking the bus between destinations is a great option.
Many Americans view traveling by bus with some trepidation, and, whether deserved or not, bus service in the US often has the reputation of being rather basic. In truth, the level of service varies greatly among bus carriers. Some carriers, like LuxBus in California or Transfloridian in Florida, offer deluxe buses and feature services that are rarely even found on airlines today, such as on-board entertainment and complimentary food and beverage service. Still, standard bus service is generally more on the budget level and offers few amenities. Food options are more likely to be a ten minute stop at a roadside fast food restaurant than on-board meal service.
The bus industry in the United States is dominated by Greyhound, which is the only remaining nationwide bus carrier. Several other companies such as Trailways and Coach USA are made up of independently owned bus companies that share marketing functions and branding. In addition there are several strong regional players in the bus industry. While these companies compete with Greyhound, they often end up sharing service on routes that do not have enough traffic to sustain two carriers. This is similar to “code sharing” in the airline industry. The most recent development in the U.S. bus industry has been the “Chinatown bus” phenomenon. Several years ago a few enterprising business people in New York’s Chinatown started running buses from Chinatown in NY to Chinatown in Boston, charging less than half of what traditional bus companies did and a fraction of what it cost to take the train or fly. They targeted Asian immigrants who wanted to shop or visit relatives and needed inexpensive and convenient transportation. Although the buses were modern and comfortable, the service was bare bones—no advertising, customer service, or bus stations. Customers simply went to the bus stop, waited for the bus, and paid the driver upon boarding. For those willing to do without frills, these companies offered virtually the same service as Greyhound at a substantially lower price. Before long, word spread about the service and all kinds of travelers started using these bus lines. They became especially popular with students, budget travelers, and people for whom the service was simply more convenient. Soon more bus companies duplicated this model and started offering service in other markets. Now you can find this type of bus service in Philadelphia, Virginia, Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco. At this point the term “Chinatown bus” is used more loosely to describe this sort of low-cost/low-frills service. Many, if not most, of the company’s do not have Chinatown as there main location and may not cater to the immigrant population at all. When these companies first started operating, concerns were raised about safety standards. There is still controversy within the industry about whether these low-cost bus companies are complying with the same regulations as the traditional companies. Nonetheless, all bus companies operating in the U.S. must undergo the same inspection standards and must comply with the same rules. Finding information about scheduled bus service is not always easy for visitors to the US. Historically bus companies have sold tickets at on-site ticket booths. Many now sell through their own websites as well. Whereas for plane travel there are many online booking sites that allow travelers to compare different carriers, it is more difficult to find route information for bus service. GotoBus.com is a centralized booking site focused on bus travel. It offers search capability similar to Expedia or Travelocity and sells tickets for many different bus and tour companies. Overall, the bus is a great option for visitors to the US who are looking for transportation between major US cities. For most cities, a car is not necessary and will be inconvenient and expensive. In metropolitan areas there are more choices for bus service today than at any time in the recent past. Particularly for shorter distances, it is the best way to go for the budget minded traveler.

Business Apartment Rentals Spain

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 11th, 2009

During the last few years, many small companies have popped up like mushrooms in popular business destinations such as Barcelona & Madrid, all promising to be the best at renting out business apartments. So how do you choose between them? What should you be looking out for? What should you try and avoid? How can you be sure that the business apartment you are renting out isn’t miles outside of town in a place that even the taxi driver hasn’t heard of? How can you be sure that you haven’t just rented out a holiday apartment on the Costa Brava? What you are looking for which sets the business apartment rental industry apart from holiday rentals is a certain degree of professionalism. You want and need a rental company which does what it says. You need to be able to rely upon check in times & dates, apartment costs, rental availability, extra services and furnishing quality. You don’t want your company staff or guests, staying in a place with rats and cockroaches, any less than you want them staying in a place without the advertised wireless Internet connection, without the promised telephone line and without the washing machine and tumble drier to get those shirts ready for that next-day important meeting. Look for a company that has a good reputation. Speak to people who have used these companies. Check out their web sites. Do they have a good image? Do they instil confidence? You can’t always judge a book by its cover, they say. But if a company can’t get a simple thing like a web site working properly, can they really provide all that is necessary to rent out professional business apartments? Take a look at customer testimonials, but most importantly, try actually speaking to someone at the company before you go ahead and book the apartment online. Whilst you may never be able to go to the place in person before the planned business trip, there really is no substitute for speaking to a real human being. So pick up the phone, give them a call and ask them all the questions you have in your mind. Chances are that if they cannot answer all your questions and make you feel happy and confident, then you have chosen the wrong place. Customer service is paramount these days, and a good business apartment rental company will be aware of this. The decision making is then up to you. Whether you are visiting for business, to work on a project, to attend a congress, to give a course, to take a course, or maybe you start living there and building up the next step in your life, and you require temporary housing, you need to concentrate on a company which focuses on professionals.
With all these issues in mind, there are a few things you should ask for:Are there basics such as a sofa, bed, TV & bathroom facilities? How far is the apartment from the centre of town or the place of your business meetings and/or conferences? Will there be someone who can be contacted at all times during the stay, who speaks your language?Do they offer a taxi service and/or airport transfer? Are there extra services such as a cleaning service, catering & baby care facilities? Is there flexibility regarding your length of stay, in the case that you might need temporary accommodation whilst looking for a permanent place to live?Is there flexibility in payment methods? Is there a safe place for your belongings? Are there any hidden costs such as agency fees?If you have an emergency, will someone be there to help you out? Who takes care of the small daily incidents you may encounter, such as a blind that gets stuck, a washing basin that suddenly starts leaking or if you happen to lock yourself out?At the end of the day, you want to find a business apartment that suits you, one where you will feel at home. Not exactly like your own house, of course, but pretty close – a nicely decorated place, cosy, pleasant, where you can keep your clothes, books, music, sit down in the sofa and watch a good movie or check your emails on your laptop on the terrace, prepare the meeting for the next day while you cook your own meal. You want to be able to invite people over for dinner or to stay for the weekend. You need a place to stay where you can feel relaxed and do as you wish.
Of course, the final decision making is up to you. But you can make this process far easier by simply doing some investigation first.

Budget Travel To Any Summer Ski Resort

Posted in travel by publisher on the June 11th, 2009

When most people think of ski resorts, they naturally picture mountains full of fresh fallen snow and people huddled around a roaring fire enjoying a cup of hot cocoa. While this image is certainly accurate, and ski resorts are some of the most popular of all vacation destinations, the prices of these resort getaways can often be beyond the means of the budget traveler.
There is another way, however, to enjoy these upscale resorts for a fraction of their in season costs. Many ski resort locations stay open all year round, and the prices of lodging, meals and local entertainment often drops precipitously after winter has passed.
Visiting a ski resort in the middle of the summer does not mean there will be nothing to do. In fact, many people prefer visiting these resorts in the off season, since their mountain locations provides for a comfortable, activity packed getaway.
For instance, most ski resorts have ample hiking trails through beautiful mountain vistas. All those great cross country ski trails become wonderful hiking and biking trails after the snow has melted, and the scenery can be even more spectacular, and more comfortable, without the cold and snow of winter.
Besides hiking and biking, there are a great many other activities to be offered as well, including horseback riding, fishing swimming, and other outdoor activities. In addition, many ski resorts use their ski lifts as fun summer sky rides, and open their slopes to such summertime activities as tobogganing down the side of the mountain. The kids in particular love these fun rides.
Another great thing about visiting a ski resort area in summer is that the mountain location often means cooler temperatures. Even when the lowland temperature is stiflingly hot, the temperature in the mountains can be refreshingly cool and comfortable. Of course, it is important to check the monthly weather for your destination and to avoid the rainy seasonThere are ski resorts in many states around the country, and the northeastern and western parts of the country have a great wealth of these resorts. While many of them stay open year round and offer a host of off season activities, not all do, so it is important to verify the summer activities of the resort you are considering. It is also a good idea to research the activities that are offered by each resort. With the concentration of ski resorts in some areas of the country, it will be easy to compare the various offerings and choose the one that best suits your individuals needs.
It is also important to research the surrounding area and see what else there is to do when you are not at the resort. While many ski resorts have plenty of activities to keep you busy for days, you will probably want to venture off the property at least a few times.
